Dixie Chicks

Love their latest:

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don't mind sayin'
It's a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Sayin' that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell and
I don't have time to go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
'Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is you think I should

a song of bitter defiance?

Actually one of the singers [Natalie Maines] from this group made a comment a few years ago to a European audience, on the eve of the US invasion of Iraq. Texan-born Natalie Maines stated that she was "ashamed" that she came from the same state as President Bush. In the US, the group suffered from a conservative backlash against that simple statement. Their CDs were literally bulldozed on the ground, conservative radio stations refused to give their songs any air-time, and the group received regular death threats and harassment. One death threat [mentioned in the song] told them they had better continue singing 'or else'. i guess this is what 'freedom' means in the US today.

So, in answer to your question, yes this song is about "bitter defiance" and the more of it that i see in the world today, the more i want to say - hallelujah! :) :)
